JURISDICTION & PROCEDURES IN THE MAYOR’S COURT
Ohio mayor’s courts have limited jurisdiction. Under Ohio law, mayor’s courts are permitted to hear traffic cases and other misdemeanor charges, including first offense DUI cases. They are called “mayor’s” courts because the mayor (or a magistrate appointed by the mayor) acts as the judge in cases brought before the court.
In Ohio, mayor’s courts cannot conduct jury trials. They can have trials to the magistrate–but no juries are available. If you have been charged in the mayor’s court, however, and would like a jury trial, then your case will be transferred to the appropriate County Municipal Court (e.g. Hamilton, Butler, etc.).
To begin the process and discuss representation for your Cincinnati-area mayor’s court criminal or traffic charge, call Attorney Doug Riddell directly at 513-655-7240. Because we know DUI charges rarely happen during 9:00-5:00 working hours, Mr. Riddell is there to take your call after hours, on evenings, weekends, and holidays.
